The Franchise affair | Josephine Tey

My first Tey – what an interesting double life she led. My curiosity is piqued. A classic detective novel, except the detective isn’t a detective. The narrative unfolds satisfyingly; nasty goings on in a closed-off house, near an insular small town, outside a dubious city, the action moving between these settings and the questionable characters therein. Issues around the apparent victim, a teenage girl, are a bit uncomfortable (put that down to ‘of its time’) – other than that a page-turning ripping yarn.
